The Science of Sleep
We all know how much better we feel after a good night’s sleep – refreshed, energised and ready to take on the world. The science of sleep is well known and getting a good night’s sleep is taking on greater importance in health messaging. Whereas once diet and exercise were thought to be the best way to optimum health, it is now being recognised that getting enough rest at night is at least as important for overall health and wellbeing.
Indeed, the consequences of poor sleep quality may be shocking to many. It has been shown to have a serious impact on health, with chronic sleep deprivation being linked to an increased risk of obesity, diabetes, heart disease and stroke, as well as an greater risk of mental health problems, such as anxiety and depression.
Who hasn’t felt the ‘brain fog’ that makes the day after a night with little sleep a struggle? According to one study, sleep deprivation can have the same effect as drinking too much, leading to memory lapse and problems concentrating.
Sleep hygiene and where to begin
Sleep hygiene refers to optimising the environment in which you sleep. Many tips as to how to gain the best night’s sleep may seem obvious, although we don’t all strictly adhere to them. Not drinking caffeine before bed, regulating a cool room temperature or avoiding screen time before sleeping are all extremely effective.
We spend up to one-third of our lives in bed, so bedtime comfort is paramount. One of the most important ways of doing this is to ensure your mattress is in peak condition. Most adults will sweat during the night as body temperature fluctuates, resulting in an average sweat production of 0,5 – 1,5l per night, while our body naturally sheds dead skin cells, harbouring dust mites, other pests and bacteria.
Sanitising your mattress can have many benefits, including:
Relief from allergies & asthma
A cleaner atmosphere in your home
Reduction of allergens in your bedroom
Restful sleep and increased productivity
Elimination of pests
Extension of the life of your mattresses
